He has successfully defended a major health care provider in a patent infringement suit and a local corporation in federal securities fraud case. Mat has provided extensive pro-bono legal representation in the area of civil liberties, including a recent victory on behalf of a transgender inmate seeking adequate medical care. In 2008, he received the Angel Award from California Lawyer magazine for his commitment to pro bono work. Prior to becoming an attorney, Mat was an environmental engineer and associate biologist at an environmental consulting firm.
